Martin Jones's own summary of his track record illustrates the skills and experience which Hartley Jones Innovation Ltd can bring along for the practical financial benefit of clients:

DR MARTIN JONES

'For 5 years prior to starting Hartley Jones Innovation Ltd in 2002, I was Director of Technology and Innovation at the well-known international engineering company Smiths Group plc. I was responsible to the Board for technical matters, including new product development, technical due diligence, innovation facilitation/troubleshooting, and technology transfer. The technologies involved in this role cover a wide range and include electronics (commercial and military), electrical interconnection, microwave engineering, mechanical and industrial design, air movement systems, acoustics and vibration engineering. Now, as a private consultant, I am pleased to list Smiths Group plc companies among my key clients.

I am a Chartered Physicist, and have also been a practising engineer for 30 years. A graduate of UMIST, my practical engineering training was as a College Apprentice with Metropolitan Vickers (later GEC) in Trafford Park, Manchester.

I live in Cambridge and have wide-ranging outside interests including the Innovation Society for the East of England, a partnership between Business, Government, and the East of England Development Agency, established to help all companies in the Eastern Region become more innovative. As the CBI member of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), I am also involved in the strategic aspects of international accreditation of laboratories and certification bodies

I was previously Managing Director of the Marine Electronics Division of Smiths (Kelvin Hughes Ltd). Based in Hainault, Essex, Kelvin Hughes is a successful world-leading manufacturer of marine radar and navigation systems, serving global naval and commercial markets. During my 10-year period there, we grew by a factor of three, improved from break-even to good profitability, and even won two Queen's Awards.

Prior to joining Smiths in 1985, I was for 9 years Technical Director of Rupert Neve & Co Ltd in Melbourn, Cambridge, responsible for the design of large-scale high grade professional audio systems for recording, film and broadcasting studios. Key customers included the BBC, Sony, Toshiba and Lucasfilm. It was in collaboration with the BBC that we designed and built the world's first digital audio studio systems.

I have lectured in electronics and acoustics at UMIST, Manchester, and wrote the successful textbook 'A Practical Introduction to Electronic Circuits', published by Cambridge University Press.'
